Stories give us the unique ability to help us explore moral ambiguity. What makes people do what they do? What makes characters choose different paths? These questions brought me to Christian Caldwell, the female witch pricker of the Great Scottish witch hunts.
For me, this story reaches back to my ancestral heritage, and integrates my interest in compelling female characters. I’m excited to explore the bonds and loyalties between women, and the choice that real historical women have had to make between living authentically and living safely. Unfortunately, that choice is all too real for modern audiences as well.
The history of witchcraft in Scotland is deep and fascinating. The opportunity for research and world building also drew me to this story. I hope for a career filled with diverse worlds and rich characters, and this project gives my team and I an incredible opportunity to develop our skill with genre storytelling.
Telling this story is a risk. It’s complex and nuanced, and the aesthetic scope is huge. I’m eager to be diving into this challenge with a team of insanely talented collaborators who each bring a personal connection to the world and characters, and add a deeply compelling color to the story. This project is being cultivated by a team that feels very attuned to each other, and our artistic vision. We hope to leave audiences asking big questions, and searching for hints of magic.
